Running from Ilfracombe to Plymouth, our cycling holiday from coast to coast in Devon, takes in beaches, rivers and stunning views across wild, untamed Dartmoor, leaving the impression that you’re pedaling through a storybook.
This ride is ideal for families and children as the majority of the 99 miles are traffic free and very rural! Mainly following former railway lines, there are few hills as your route takes you through tunnels and across dramatic Victorian viaducts and bridges.
Day 1: Arrive in Ilfracombe
Arrive in Ilfracombe. Enjoy a bite to eat or maybe a cream tea in a delightful tea shop and catch a good night’s sleep. Your Devon coast to coast adventure starts tomorrow morning.
Day 2: Ilfracombe to Merton – approx 40 miles
After a full, hearty breakfast you will cycle south on a traffic free path before joining quiet roads with amazing views of the bay. At Braunton, a 30 mile stretch of traffic free route begins. You’ll ride through Barnstaple, Bideford and Torrington, as the level path follows the rivers of the Taw and Torridge. Your destination for the night is Merton, a delightful little Devonshire town.
Day 3: Merton to Tavistock - approx 40 miles
You start today on quiet roads before joining the Granite Way and winding down into Tavistock. You crest the high point of the ride near Yelverton, continuing to take traffic free paths and tracks.
Day 4: Tavistock to Plymouth - approx 19 miles
Joining the Drakes Trail and crossing Gem Bridge, you’ll find yourself in Plymouth in no-time. On arrival, you’ll travel along the seafront, past the famous Lido and be able to grab a well-earned finish-line ice-cream.
