  • Gravel
  • Israel
  • 5 Nights
  • 3* Accommodation

Israel, a small country with as many climates as cultures. Rush down the hill out of Jerusalem to the lowest point on earth to start this exhilirating road ride.

Itinerary

Sunday – 63km, 940m uphill

Ride down the hills of Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem, and soon find yourself in the desert on the way to Jericho. A tour of the Qumran National Park, where the oldest original scrolls of the Old Testament were discovered, and proceed to Nachal David, where a short hike takes us to beautiful natural pools and a waterfall, where we can take a welcome dip even in the winter. From here, it's a short ride into Ein Gedi.

Monday – 38km, 1,170m uphill

Today is less riding and more history. We start the morning with a short ride to the Dead Sea, to enjoy a dip in this unique lake. A short ride north takes us to the Massada fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we take a fascinating 2-hour walking tour. A tremendous uphill, enjoying fabulous views over the Dead Sea and Moab mountains in Jordan, takes us to our hotel in Arad.

Tuesday – 95km, 1390m uphill

We start with a ride to the top of the Scorpion's Ascent, a crazy serpentine desert road. Time permitting, we will do a 1-2 hour hike down the Gov river bed, which has a fun combination of ladders and ropes that we descend. From here, we proceed into the Large Makhtesh, a stark crater with moon-like scenery. We will stop and check out the coloured sands along the way, proceed to the desert town of Yeruham, and end the day next to the Ramon Crater.

Wednesday – 96km, 930m uphill

After a view over the edge of the amazing Ramon crater, we will ride down the road into it, and start riding south along the route of the Giro d'Italia – the 2nd most important road race worldwide, which started in Israel in 2018. We cross the entire crater, occasionally stopping to see some geological sites of interest, and at the southern exit from the crater, we reach a stunning canyon which we can hike for an hour.

Thursday – 85km, 1220m uphill

Our finale, an exciting desert ride through the moonscape of the Ovda plains, and then up some steep inclines and fantastic downhills that cross over several mountains and lead us to a first view over the Red Sea. We end our ride in Eilat.

Friday – no riding, transfer to Tel Aviv.
